Just Because You Matured, Doesn't Mean Others Have

Updated: Jun 5

When I think of maturity, I mainly think of the period from middle school to high school, when people stop acting immaturely and start thinking before they act. The problem is that, although most people mature during that period, a significant portion of people don't.

I'm not gonna start this by saying that I am such an ultra-mature person, but I would say that I am someone who matured earlier on. Being immature sometimes isn't necessarily a bad thing. Being childish and having that sense of imagination and playfulness is a good thing. What isn't a good thing, is when people are immature in a rude, irresponsible, or selfish way. There is a difference between playfulness and being just plain rude. An example of this would be when people do things seeking attention. I used to know a girl who would constantly interrupt others to one-up their story. I quite literally remember telling her about a new shirt I got that I was wearing to school, and she proceeded to make fun of it and talk about how she went on a shopping trip to Lululemon the day before. It was one of those moments where I couldn't help but wonder "why?" Why was she acting that way? Was it that big of a deal to her to interrupt me, make fun of me, and proceed to one-up my simple story? It took me a couple of years to realize that not everyone was as mature as I had once believed we all were. When I see others around me wearing super revealing outfits for attention or making fun of others for not having as good of grades I have to remind myself that not everyone else understands that doing stuff like that isn't attractive or impressive. It's quite literally the opposite.

I've learned that there is usually 1 main reason for people acting out constantly. Social pressure. Usually, when someone is around others they are trying to impress, they can begin to act out. I know a lot of people at school who act in certain ways to make their friends laugh, embarrass others, or seem cool. I always end up becoming disinterested in people who act in those attention-seeking ways. Acting immaturely never has positive consequences. From what I've seen, immature behavior often damages relationships. I have dealt with having friends who were mature and street-smart but then began to be immature as time went on because they got caught up in the wrong group of people. If you've ever had to deal with a "friendship breakup" for reasons like this, you'll understand that it can be tough to see a person you once looked up to become a friend whose path you can no longer follow. At the end of the day, people will change. It's just up to you whether you want to be a follower or make your own path.

What I am Looking Forward to

First off, tonight the Wicked: For Good trailer is coming out, so I am very excited! More than that though, I am extremely excited for Sabrina Carpenter's new single "Manchild" to come out tomorrow. So many thrilling things happening this week that make me so anxious (in a good way of course). Since school will be ending soon, I want to give myself a little shoutout! I am currently one of the top ranked students in my class. Although I am a happy camper knowing this, I am also very nervous since there is a lot of competition. I am just so proud of myself for never giving up. Also, a huge shoutout to my mom, dad, and sister for cheering me on and supporting me throughout the year. Whether it was during AP exam week, performance days for our musical, or volleyball game days, they always showed up. Thanks for always being there and having my back.

Song on Repeat

Venus ~ Frankie Avalon

Recently, this song has been playing nonstop on my Spotify playlist. It reminds me of my grandpa because it used to be his favorite song before he passed. It also reminds me of my grandma because as she put it "Frankie Avalon has my heart in a beat!" This song is so romantic and old timey, it feels so mystical magical as Benson Boone might say.
