Stage Fright

Do you have a fear of public speaking?

  • Yes!

  • No.

I’m a theater kid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t feel stage fright. It’s one of the most common fear in the world for a reason. The feeling in my stomach before I have to go on stage. The feeling of sweat beginning to drip down the back of my neck. The feeling of all eyes on me. Everything that causes others to hate speaking in front of people, I get too. If anything, I feel it a bit more because I perform in front of big crowds. I get especially nervous when I have to sing a high note or do something embarrassing in front of big crowds. That’s why I’ve come up with a phrase that I use every time I am nervous to speak in front of a people. “Everyone wants you to succeed.” That’s what I always tell myself. No one wants to see me fall on my face and fail. Knowing that everyone hopes I do good, makes me feel a bit more relaxed.

Here are a few other things I’ve taught myself when it comes to public speaking to keep me calm.

  1. Eye contact is key. If I can see people’s interest in what I am saying, then I know that I’m doing a good job.

  2. More than likely, no one is gonna remember. Can you remember every single person who's tripped over their words when doing a presentation in class? Exactly, no one will remember if you do mess up.

  3. I always have to remind myself that this is a very small moment in my life that I probably won't remember in the long run. No matter whether I do great or terrible, it won't be that big of a deal later in life.

  4. If you're gonna do something, then do it all the way. That's why, when I am on stage, I go all out. Have the courage to not even let yourself think about it, but just to do it.

Something That Makes My Day Easier

I hate running long distance because I absolutely suck at having a good breathing technique and I always end up coming home coughing up a storm. Plus, I'm just not a big fan of running in general. Lately I have been trying to work on breathing techniques, so I can sing better on stage while dancing. I've resorted to long distance roller blading sessions. Sometimes it can get boring though, so I've found that calling my friends through my headphones while rollerblading is not only entertaining, but it teaches me to be able to talk while controlling my breathing. If you're looking for something new to try, and you haven't rollerbladed already, you should definitely try it out!

Song on Repeat

Falling Behind ~ Laufey

I've become a bit of a Laufey fan lately and this song has been my go-to by her. It's such a coffee shop vibe that I love to listen to when I am driving, studying, or cleaning! She has an old timey sound to her voice which is so soothing.
